    Description

This Indonesian Godogan Frog Mask from Bali is made from Carved Wood and Ox Hair. It has a hinged mouth and mounts on a stand. Size of mask alone is 10" tall X 8 1/2" wide.
This frog mask called “Godogan” is used in the Balinese masked theatre called “Topeng”. These performances appeared in the 15th century in Bali & Java where it is still prevalent now. These tribal dances are held in honor of their ancestors.  The Frog Dance is the Balinese version of the fairy tale of the princess who marries a frog. The Frog (who is really the Prince of Jenggala) meets the princess of the Daha Kingdom in the forest and they marry. The frog is unhappy because of his ugliness and asks the Gods to make him a man.
